TESTING, ADJUSTING AND BALANCING (TAB)TECHNICIAN

Job Title:      Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB) Technician

Main Purpose of the Job:        This position is open to someone with experience in Testing, Adjusting and Balancing or an entry level technician                                             

Reports to:       Management or Lead Technician (for trainee)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take a proactive approach in participating in the company’s NEBB TAB Technician Training Program
  • Interpret mechanical drawings and specifications for ventilation systems requiring air and hydronic testing, adjusting and balancing
  • Test systems using specialized and calibrated instruments to measure system’s performance following NEBB Procedural Standards. Collect actual values for pressure, temperature, rotation speed, velocity, and flows for an air or hydronic audit and to improve the system’s performance.
  • Discuss system operations with end users to verify that malfunctions have been corrected.
  • Communicate with design engineers to clarify changes in design, and provide a technical explanation on the causes impeding a system to reach performance.
  • Make system adjustments using balancing dampers, circuit balancing valves, VFD’s (variable frequency drives), etc. to ensure performance.
  • Prepare the report which summarizes the testing and balancing notes, any deficiencies found during the TAB work.
  • Maintain proper documentation of daily activities using project specific reporting procedures
  • Coordinate site visits and work schedule with the mechanical firm installer, the General Contractor, the Building Operation firm or the owner.
  • The use of ladders is required to complete the task of Testing, Adjusting and Balancing of air and hydronic systems. All employees must possess the ability to safely exercise ladder usage.
  • Must have Working at Heights and WHMIS before starting on site
  • The use of aerial platforms is required for some HVAC systems. All employees must possess the ability to safely exercise aerial platforms usage.
  • Perform work in a safely manner and in accordance with the company’s safety policy
  • Ability to travel regularly with the occasional overnight stays for some projects

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma in HVAC systems or equivalent work experience
  • Mathematical proficiency is a necessity for completing basic and advanced computations associated with Air and Hydronic balancing
  • Comfortable using Excel and cloud file sharing applications
  • Ability to review and understand mechanical drawings and specifications
  • Very good mechanical aptitude in using hand tools
  • Ability to use specialize instruments such as Pitot Tube, Manometer, Anemometer, Velometer, Tachometer, Psychrometer, and Thermometer
  • Ability to understand and analyze mechanical HVAC systems for determining issues and determining basic recommendations for issue resolution(s)
  • NEBB certification is required to advance beyond Entry Level

Restrictive Access Requirements:

  • Clean background check as most facilities require a police clearance letter

Working Conditions:

  • Work environment: various commercial, industrial and residential buildings, new construction sites or retrofit buildings, mechanical rooms, confined spaces, hospitals, etc.
  • Working conditions may vary and based on the scope of each project, you may be required to work outside and be exposed to rain, snow, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Work hours may vary based on the scope of work for each project and at times you will be required to work weekends, overnight shift work or early morning shift work.
  • A variety of physical demands are required to completed the work on site: climbing ladders, climbing stairs, access building roofs, open ceiling tiles, use aerial platforms to access ventilation equipment, stand for long hours, work in confined spaces
  • Maintain a valid Driver’s Licence as project locations vary throughout the Greater Toronto Area or within the Province of Ontario.
  • Must be able to lift, move, and carry equipment (up to 50 pounds)
